In 2016, we will be doing a monthly tribute to one amazing 80’s rock band by playing a rock block of that bands songs!  The Band Of The Month for MAY is Van Halen / David Lee Roth.

Van Halen is an American hard rock band formed in Pasadena, California in 1972. From 1974 until 1985, the band was comprised of brothers, Eddie & Alex Van Halen on guitars and drums, vocalist David Lee Roth, and bassist Michael Anthony. Van Halen is one of only five rock bands that have had two studio albums sell more than 10 million copies in the U.S. Additionally, Van Halen charted the most number-one hits in the history of Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart and they are one of the world’s best selling bands of all time, having sold more than 80 million records.

Did you know? Here are some interesting facts about Van Halen and David Lee Roth:

-David Lee Roth was born in Bloomington, Indiana
-David has stated that the red dye used in candy at the time of his childhood would ramp up his hyperactivity and lead to “Monkey Hour” at the family home. He proudly boasts that he has “successfully turned Monkey Hour into a career.”
-VH was discovered by Gene Simmons in 1976, and he produced their first demo tape.
-The band’s debut album has sold over 12 million copies
-In 1982, Van Halen was invited by producer Quincy Jones to contribute the guitar solo for Michael Jackson’s single “Beat It” Van Halen reportedly declined any payment for the recording, deeming a credit on the album sufficient.
-The band then earned a spot in the Guinness Book World Records for the highest-paid single appearance of a band: $1.5 million for a 90-minute set at the 1983 US Festival.
-In early 1985, while still a member of Van Halen, Roth released Crazy From The Heat, an EP of off-beat standards
-After leaving VH, Dave planned to release a movie, also titled Crazy From The Heat. The film was budgeted at $20 million by CBS Films ; however, the project folded after the consolidation of CBS Studios.
-The original Van Halen planned to reunite in 1996. Their attempt quickly went sour after an infamous appearance on September 5, 1996, at the MTV Video Awards during which Roth and Eddie Van Halen reportedly threatened each other.
-In 2006 The David Lee Roth Show replaced Howard Stern, on terrestrial radio, after Stern’s move to SIRIUS satellite radio. The show lasted four months and ended in a lawsuit.
-Van Halen reunited with DLR in 2007. Original bassist, Michael Anthony, was not asked to participate and was replaced with Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli’s son, Wolfgang.
